meadow arts: borderlands
What is a border? To many, it may be a line on a map or a way to distinguish one country from the next - BorderLands, exhibited at Hay Castle, invites us to rethink this. From the Welsh borders to Antarctica, twenty-two artists are featured and explore belonging and identity amongst other themes that are more relevant now than ever. BorderLands has come at a time where communities are being divided, nationalism is on the rise and violence is being carried out - offering us a small slice of hope.

The exhibition showcases a diverse range of mediums, including metal road signs, tents, photographs on textile and self-adhesive tape. By presenting stories and ideas through these various forms, we get to better understand the experiences of others - seeing through a different lens. Each artwork allows us to humanise the world around us, whether it be far or near.
With the works being shown in Hay Castle and its grounds, the boundary of seeing a castle as a traditional landmark gets broken. You'll see artwork in the form of a flag by British Ghanian artist Larry Achiampong flying above the castle and neon lettering by Hilary Jack stating ' No borders, just horizons, only freedom' on the castle walls. By partnering with Meadow Arts to showcase BorderLands, Hay Castle lets us know they are happy to amplify artists voices and messages surrounding topics many institutions shy away from.

In addition to the exhibition, Meadow Arts is also putting on the BorderLands Walking Series. Each walk will be led by a different artist, offering unique perspectives in response to the theme of borders. More information, including booking information can be found on the website.
